10 Reasons to Add Handball
to Your Physical Education Program

  1. Fitness – In his classic book, Aerobics, Dr. Kenneth Cooper states…”The best exercises are running, swimming, cycling, walking, handball, basketball and squash." Handball also develops each of the other components of physical fitness. In a survey by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports, 14 popular sports and exercises were rated by seven fitness experts. Using the criteria of cardio-respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, muscular strength, flexibility and balance, handball is number one, followed by swimming and jogging.

  2. A Lifetime Sport – Team sports and games are fine, but it’s important to expose students to lifetime activities as well. Handball is one of the few lifetime sports that is fitness and skill related.

  3. Size is No Advantage – You don’t have to be big to be good.

  4. Opportunities for Competition – The United States Handball Association and its affiliated state and regional organizations sponsor age group tournaments for players from 9-and-under to 90-plus, a true lifetime of physical fitness.

  5. Develops Both Sides of the Body – Unlike other individual court sports, both hands must be used. The skill development of both sides of the brain has shown to help young people in the classroom as well.

  6. Easy to Teach – Handball is fun and the rules are simple. The game can be taught as a “cooperative” activity (no losers) or as a competitive sport.

  7. Off-Season Conditioner – For coaches, handball is a great game for your athletes in the off season. Not only will it keep them I shape, it will develop quickness and fast reaction times.

  8. Free Lesson Plans for all Grade Levels – Forget having to write up lesson plans! We will provide them to you at no cost. The USHA has developed teaching guides with 15 unit lesson plans for elementary students (K-5), junior and senior high students and for the 4-wall version of handball played at universities and clubs.

  9. Low Cost – Courts and equipment can be as simple as existing walls and balls that you already have. Even the pros only need gloves, balls and eye guards. If your school cannot afford equipment, contact USHA and we will make sure you are supplied.

  10. A Game for Everyone – With the invention of the Big Blue and USHA White Label, handball has become a sport for everyone. These balls are softer than the regulation handball and are easier on the hands.

The USHA provides teaching guides and handball equipment to teachers looking to start handball programs at their schools or clubs.
