Simple Green Pro in Peoria -- Final Results

Final Results

Simple Green Pro Stop, Landmark Health Club, Peoria, Ill.,Nov. 9-11

David Chapman never let Naty Alvarado get untracked in the final of the first Simple Green pro stop of the season. “He played good, real good,” Naty said after scoring 3, 8, 8, in three straight losing efforts.

“I played OK,” Chapman admitted. “But not as good as I’ll be playing in February.”
Chapman has dropped some of his extra weight and claims to be on target for his best play in Feb. “I’m 190 now and I’ll be 185 in Sacramento,” the former No. 1 ranked pro said. “I’ll be moving my feet better on my back wall shots when I get in better shape.”
The most excitement in the final came during arguments with each other and referee James Komsthoeft. Chapman won the first game easily and was ahead 10-3 in the second when Alvarado made a belated run. The final game saw Chapman take a 7-0 lead before Alvarado rallied to close to 5-7. “Naty wasn’t as aggressive as he was last year,” Komshoeft said. “He didn’t have his big serve, either.”

Tony Healy won the pro consolation over Matt Hiber, 2, 8. “I hope they (Healy and semifinalist Paul Brady) can keep coming,” Komsthoeft said. “They’re better than a lot of guys who are on the tour.” Healy (24) will be going back and forth to Ireland to compete and keep his job. Brady (22) will be staying in the Chicago area with Michael Finnegan.

“We may not be the biggest but we’ve got some of the best hospitality,” Peoria Handball Club President Steve Matheny boasted with good reason. Players were never without something being served in the hospitality room. With the pro stop being a success in terms of publicity in the local players, enthusiastic response from the local players and even financially, the club is looking to bring the tour back on a regular basis. The great support from the Landmark and the players make that a no-brainer for the association. Matheny also took home the top prize in the 34th annual Peoria Tournament’s masters singles, defeating Eli Seaman in the final, 1, 4. Mark Heightoff won the consolation over Matt May, 8, 11.

In a very competitive open, thanks to the entries from Southwest Missouri State University and Lake Forest College, Kevin Pettus edged Bill Mehilos in the final, (18), 9, 8. SMSU’s Pat Flanigan defeated LFC alumni Keith Vassal in the consolation.
Dan Monshau, 15, is headed for bigger and better things. Dan defeated the hard-hitting Ray Burzik from the Univ. of Illinois in the final, 20, 11. Megan Mehilos won the B consolation.

Terry Mehilos won the Women’s singles, defeating Katie Sedgwick in the battle of undefeateds on Sunday, 10, 18.

Steve Wanless won the C singles, outlasting each of his younger opponents, including Matt Heightoff in the final, 5, 13. Mike Scott won the consolation over Chad Schatz, (11), 14, 8.

Masters B was won by Paul Arteaga over Dennis Giba, 7, 7. Warren Wilson took the consolation over the fourth Mehilos to play for a title on Sunday. Dad Gus came up short against Wilson, 5, 12.

Dave Schaeffer won the 50-plus over SMSU coach Tommy Burnett, 12, 5. Chicago Policeman Joe Brzana won the consolation over Tom Hubbard.
Ron Gronemeyer won the 60-plus with a final tiebreaker over Ron James, 15, (16), 0. Terry Comina won the consolation with an 11-10 tiebreaker win over Bill Gardner after splitting the first two games, 15, (12).
