Alvarado Jr. Retains No. 1, Defeats Chapman in Five Games
CHATTANOOGA – Naty Alvarado Jr. (Hesperia, Calif.) and Dave Chapman (St.
Charles, Mo.) put on the greatest pro stop final this season, if not in recent
years.
The SIMPLE GREEN/USHA pro handball tour is visited the Sports Barn in Chattanooga,
Tenn. The pro stop was held in conjunction with the USHA Southeast Regionals.
Alvarado and Chapman had a lot on the line entering today’s pro stop final,
both were playing for the No. 1 ranking on the SIMPLE GREEN/USHA pro tour.
Alvarado and Chapman both were playing exceptionally well throughout the pro
stop. Prior to the final, Chapman had won each round in three games, with the
most points scored against him was seven, twice, by Norm Dunne (San Jose), in
the quarterfinals.
Alvarado’s road to the final hit one speed bump when he faced brother-in-law
John Bike Jr. (Hesperia, Calif.), as it took a mere four games to advance.
In the first game Chapman and Alvarado were all tied up at eight when Alvarado
went on a 3-0 run to win the first 11-8.
Chapman evened the match in the second game winning 11-6. Alvarado then returned
the favor winning the second 11-9. Chapman fought back in fourth game and took
advantage of Alvarado’s shot selection as he won the fourth 11-3.
“I tried a lot of different serves,” said Chapman. “I was basically
trying to find a serve that he would not roll out. He played really well today.”
In the fifth and deciding game, the crowd gathered around the exhibition court
to see who was going to walk away with the top honors. Alvarado got off to a
quick start getting ahead 3-0. Chapman got the side out and managed to even the
score at three a piece.
Alvarado was able to stop Chapman at three points and went up 6-3 and then never
looked back as he scored five more points to win 11-3.
“I tried to separate the two of us by getting ahead,” said Alvarado. “I
knew if I could get a lead on him and keep ahead of him, he would get nervous
and make mistakes.
“In the fourth game I made a lot of bad shot selections. Chapman took advantage
of my mistakes. My goal in the fifth game was just to get ahead early and control
the match.”
Vince Munoz (Whittier, Calif.) and John Bike Jr. put on a stellar five game performance
in the third place playoff match. Munoz was able to overtake Bike’s powerful
serves and incredible gets winning with scores of 4-11, 11-3, 8-11, 11-2, 11-1.
“Vince (Munoz) and I always play close,” commented Bike. “I
have not been able to beat him in awhile, I had my chances, but as the match
wore on, my lower body just kept on getting tighter and tighter.”
Anton Wilson (Fresno) defeated Chris Rusing (Seattle) in the final of the Pro
Challenger, 15-9, 15-2.
The next pro event will take place at this year’s four-wall nationals in
Southern California, June 16-23. The 21-point scoring format will be used and
Chapman will defend his title and see if he can win his seventh national four-wall
title.
