Third Time is a Charm for Chapman, Wins Pro Stop #3

ANCHORAGE- Dave Chapman (St. Charles, Mo.) finally got the monkey off of his back and wins his first pro stop of the 2000-01 season, the SIMPLE GREEN/USHA Pro Stop #3 in Alaska.

Chapman defeated Vince Munoz (Whittier, Calif.) in the final 11-10, 11-5, 11-5.

I had a lot of energy out there, said Chapman, who attributes his mental and physical stamina a key to his win today.

I felt great out there, said Chapman. After I loss in Milwaukee (pro stop #2 in December 2000), I bought a treadmill and a home gym. I have been working out at home more and I feel that really helped me out there on the court.

In Milwaukee my semifinal match was a difficult as here with the same amount of time to recover, but it was like night and day, I felt great out there.

Munoz, on the other hand, was on the complete other end of the spectrum. Munoz went five games with Tyler Hamel (Houston) in the quarterfinals and four games against Naty Alvarado (Hesperia, Calif.), which took its toll.

I ran out of gas today, said Munoz. I was hitting my shots in the first game, but after that, I had nothing left.

Early in the first game, Chapman found himself down 6-1 and at that time he had exhausted his second time out. Chapman did all that he could to take Munoz out of his game and regain control of the tempo of the match. Chapman evened the score at six and found himself serving game point at 10-7.

Munoz got his shot back and evened the score at 10, but Chapman was able to get the final point in his fourth try to win the first game and cruise on through the next two.

I started out with the lob serve along the left-side wall, which I was able to score some points, said Chapman. However I was having trouble with the ball hitting the wall, so I then switched to the high overhand three-wall serve.

In the consolation final, Marcos Chavez (Buena Park, Calif.) made the most out of his trip to Alaska, when called up on very short notice, say 12 hours, to fill a last minute vacancy from Danny Bell (Quebec) who was stuck in Montreal due to weather.

Chavez defeated Tom Little III (Mound City, Kan.) 13-15, 15-12, 11-7.

The SIMPLE GREEN/USHA Pro handball tour would like to sincerely thank Rich Curtner, Richard Rayner, and all the Alaska Handball players that opened their homes to the pros as well as the fans who were there every match. The hospitality was first class and the pro tour is looking forward to returning to Alaska in the near future.

The next stop for the SIMPLE GREEN/USHA Pro tour will be in Houston, March 2-4 in conjunction with the USHAs Womens Classic. Look for more information in the February issue of Handball Magazine and the USHAs website, www.ushandball.org.
