Irish Eyes are Smiling

Milwaukee, Wisc. - Paul Brady was the first Irish player to advance to a pro final and then did one better on Sunday, becoming the first from handball’s birthplace to win a pro stop. Everything went Brady’s way all weekend and Sunday was the culmination when he defeated No. 2 ranked Vince Munoz, 10, 13.
Just three weeks prior Munoz had defeated Brady in the quarters, 1, 9, 4, in the 11-point format. Fighting a cold for the week going into Milwaukee and during the event, Munoz wasn’t at his best here but Brady was a different player than he was in their last meeting in Seattle. “I had played in a tournament back home the week before Seattle and I was sore there,” Brady said of his turnaround.
In the pro consolation final, Marcos Chavez overpowered Chris Tico, 15-12, 15-9, in a solid effort by both players. Considering Sean Lenning was ready to break into the top 12 by winning previous consolation titles, the pros have taken notice that these ranking points are important.
The Simple Green/USHA Pro Stop was held in conjunction with the Greater Milwaukee Classic, one of the best annual amateur events in the country. The Classic attracted a strong field from the Midwest in all events.

Early Round Results

USHA/Simple Green Pro Saturday Results

Brady reaches first Pro final

Top seeded David Chapman fell to food poisoning and a hot-shooting Anton Wilson for his first quarterfinal loss since the ’97 nationals. “I was up all night and it didn’t get any better this morning,” Chapman said of his stomach problems.
Wilson held off a determined but weak Chapman for the win but had little left for Ireland’s Paul Brady in the semis. “I was sore in there,” Wilson said. “But he (Brady) has been playing great all weekend.
In the bottom bracket, No. 2 Vince Munoz, who came to Milwaukee with a cold didn’t let that affect his game on Saturday. Munoz stopped Tony Healy in two games and John Bike in three.
Sean Lenning’s run up the rankings almost took a big jump when he went up one game to none on John Bike in the quarters. Bike wore the youngster down with his power and retrieving to win in three games. With Hamel’s win, it will be close as to whether Sean will need to qualify in Boston. “We’ll plan on being there until we hear otherwise,” Sean’s dad Larry said.
In the consolation, Chris Tico continues to impress with wins over Tommy Little and Dan Armijo. On Sunday, Tico will face Marcos Chavez, who defeated Emmett Peixoto.

USHA/Simple Green Pro Results for Friday

Three of the first four matches were very close at The Wisonsin Athletic Club on Friday as Tyler Hamel held onto hope of staying on the tour with an 11-10 tiebreaker win over Norm Dunne. Then Anton Wilson earned an 11-10 win over Danny Bell in the tiebreaker and David Chapman needed to rally at the end of both games in his two-game win over Emmett Peixoto.
In other words, it was a great first day of action in West Allis where games were played to 21 points with a tiebreaker to 11. “Anybody can win an 11-point game,” host Charlie Keller said. “This is real handball and it will be tough to beat Chapman.”
“I don’t know if I’m happy for you or sad for me,” Norm Dunne said to Hamel after dropping the tiebreaker after taking a 10-6 lead. Hamel had fallen out of the top 12 and got the chance to play in Milwaukee after Naty Alvarado stayed home with a sore shoulder. The win will give Hamel a chance to stay in the top 12.
One player who should move into the top 12 is Sean Lenning. The 17-year-old phenom was happy when he drew Dan Armijo in the Thursday seeding meeting and didn’t let the opportunity pass with a 12, 15 win and his first advance to the quarterfinals.

Simple Green/USHA Pro Stop No. 2

The Wisonsin Athletic Club in West Allis will heat up on Friday when action gets underway at 10 a.m. in the second stop on the Simple Green/USHA pro stop No. 2.

No. 1 seeded David Chapman drew Emmett Peixoto, while No. Vince Munoz, who considers Milwaukee his "home court" drew Pete Crouser. "I've won here and reached the final a few times," Munoz said.

Here's the schedule:
10 a.m.: Norm Dunne vs. Tyler Hamel
11:15: Marcos Chavez vs. Paul Brady
12:30: David Chapman vs. Emmett Peixoto
1:45: Danny Bell vs. Anton Wilson
3:00: Pete Crouser vs. Vince Munoz
4:15: Tony Healy vs. Chris Tico
5:30: John Bike vs. Tommy Little
6:45: Sean Lenning vs. Danny Armijo

In what could have been the first-ever playoff on Thurs. evening, the absence of Naty Alvarado Jr. gave Tyler Hamel and Pete Crouser the night off. If Naty's sore shoulder would have allowed him to play, Crouser, who moved to no. 12 in the rankings without playing in the first stop would have played off against Hamel, the player he displaced. With Naty staying home, both players were in the draw.
