HES Pro Singles and Invitational Doubles

Posted Tuesday, November 14, 2006 by USHA

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - The one day event was held at the HES. The facility serves as the indoor back-up for the United States Handball Association’s annual National One-wall Handball Championships. All matches consisted of one 25 point game. This was a USHA members only tournament which awarded cash prizes to all divisions. The tournament operated at a loss of approximately $350.

Thanks to Max and Moshit Rivkin for their help with making arrangements for the court time. It is always a pleasure to deal with them.

INVITATIONAL DOUBLES
By Artie Fuchs

The final pitted Paulie Angel and Artie Fuchs against Steve Barger and Dan Danicyk. The game, which was nip-and-tuck, became tied at 10 all. At this point Angel’s serves and kills combined with the “wily” Fuch’s steadiness proved to be too much as they went on to prevail 25-15. Many thanks to Jack Feldman for helping out with the tournament.

Doubles Invitational Draw

MENS SINGLES
By Albert Apuzzi

The semifinals turned out to be very exciting. Polanco, known primarily for his doubles prowness, held a 15-8 lead before falling 25-21 to Jagnandan. In the other semifinal match Wright was up 17-8 when Sala mounted a massive comeback that fell short resulting in a 25-21 loss.

In the final, Satish broke out to a comfortable lead over Wright and then stalled. He just couldn’t seem to make the last few points. After Wright rallied for a few points, Satish buckled down and finally captured the championship 25-15.

Men's Singles Draw

WOMENS SINGLES
By Albert Apuzzi & Milton Jones (ACE Tour handball)

The first semifinal was filled with long deep rallies. Davis was able to convert points from the rallies and prevailed over Ten 25-9. In the other semifinal McCourt, reigning national singles champion, held a 19-12 lead before Pares zoomed ahead 24-22. McCourt regained served and scored two points to knot the score at 24 all before hitting herself with the serve and opening an opportunity for Pares. Pares jumped at the chance and didn’t waste her break, scoring the last point for the win.

Tracy Davis claims the women’s HES pro singles title by defeating Brenda Pares 25-19 in the finals. It was Pares who jumped out to a 12-4 lead on Davis as she was trying to find her range on the court. Once Davis was able to get into the flow, she started running points with both hand fly kills off her low serve return. Davis opened up a commanding lead over Pares with an 18-12 advantage. Pares called a time out to finally slow Davis down and was able to make a small run. Davis gained the serve to scores her 22nd point. With a side-out, Pares took serve and rans to 19 easily. At one point it seemed that Pares was going to pull another comeback as she did against Theresa McCourt in the semis. But Davis was able to stop the run and pull out the win 25-19.

The wave of the women’s quality of play has really gone to the next level beginning at the 2006 USHA Nationals. The women even had a little intensity with a ref issue in the Veronica Figueroa/Theresa McCourt match. But in the end, things were resolved and there were no hard feelings. The women are letting it be known, "Yes we play just as hard as the men with as much intensity." It's nice to see.

Ron Cook Memorial Peachtree Open - USHA CS #1 Final Results
Men's Open Singles - Peixoto d. Lenning, 21-18, 21-4
Men's Open Doubles - Peixoto/Tico d. Lenning/Wachholz, 21-15, 21-2

Posted Friday, November 3, 2006 by USHA

ATHENS, Ga. – Emmett Peixoto jumped to early leads in the first game only to see Sean Lenning fight back from a 12-16 deficit to gain an 18-16 advantage. Peixoto gained the side out and served an ace to end his offensive drought.

Lenning passed Peixoto down the left (glass) wall to earn the sideout, but Peixoto answered with a left handed kill to the get the serve and serve out the match 21-18.

In the second set, the two played even at 2-2, until a Lenning hand error gave Peixoto the slight 3-2 edge. It was a lead Peixoto would never surrender as he stepped up his offensive game to win 21-4.

In the Open Doubles, Peixoto and Chris Tico fought off Lenning and Lance Wachholz rallies to win the first game 21-15. In the second, Peixoto took over and kept the ball away from Lenning, closing out the match 21-2.

The Ron Cook Memorial Peach Tree Open kicked off the second season to the USHA Championship Series. Players enjoyed an excellent banquet Saturday night at the Hilltop Grille where tournament director Pat Boyd announced division winners, presented trophies, and thanked all the tournament's sponsors.

A "Special Thank You" goes to Pat and Lori Boyd for their endless hours of work to bring a Championship Event to Georgia. It was the first handball tournmant ever held at the beautiful Ramsey Student Rec. Center at the University of Georgia.

A BIG Thank You to the following tournament sponsers: Atlantic Coast Textiles, Atlanta Auto Brokers, Functional Assessment Systems, Laarhoven Design, Familes of SMA, Quantum Composers, and World Pro Handball. Thank you for supporting handball and making this event possible!

Simple Green US Open and Naty Alvarado Classic
Oct. 19-22, Orange County Calif.

“Everything has come together at the right time for Bruce (Fabrizio) to get involved in a big way,” said Mark Shelgren of the first of at least three Simple Green US Open events. This year's event offers $70,000 in prize money and live webcasting to a worldwide audience.

“Naty’s been running a great, fun tournament in Hesperia for 15 years and decided to bring it to Los Cab with more courts, the ability to webcast and eventually televise,” Mark said. “Bruce will see how far it can go in three years and then re-evaluate. This is a great start,” Mark said of the webcast, great turnout and support for the event.

The opening day of play saw the Open singles and doubles whittled both events down to the money round of 8. The amateur events of the annual Naty Alvarado Classic will also get underway on Friday.

Dessie Keegan proved he could keep the ball down while driving it harder than anyone else in the game today againt Tommy Little, earning an 11-8 win and the right to face Naty Alvarado Jr. on Friday. Paul Brady, Tony Healy and Emmett Peixoto, the other three top seeds along with Alvarado, also advanced with strong showings.

2006 USHA National One-Wall Championships

“This was the hardest one yet,” Satish Jagnandan said after defeating Cesar Sala for his third consecutive singles title. It was an emotional day as play moved indoors for the finals and Satish was overcome with emotions after the 11-0 tiebreaker.

“He’s pretty good,” Sala said with a wry smile acknowledging the huge understatement and proving himself more than a worthy opponent by winning the second game, 21-11.

Sala earned a title later in the day when he and Joe Kaplan came back from a first-game loss to edge PeeWee Castro and Willie Polanco in a tiebreaker.

All but the final three matches were played indoors at the HES, where play was limited to three courts but proved a godsend when the rain started at 5:30 a.m. and lasted until almost noon.

Theresa McCourt earned a slam in the Women’s open events, teaming with Tracy Davis to defeat Veronica Figueroa and Dana Everett in two games.

Jurell Bastidas reversed his earlier loss to Allan Sanchez to win the playoff in the A singles that was necessitated by a three-way tie for first.

Al Torres and Paul Williams turned in a dominating performance in the Masters doubles, defeating Dan Vera and Mike Angley in two games.

In the second round-robin to come down to a three-way tie for matches won, Joe Agosto earned a slam in the 50s with Rene Carabello as his partner. The difference: four more total points scored in a losing effort.

In an extremely close C doubles final, Fabrizio Alvarez and Chris Miranda dropped the first game 21-20, won the second 21-20 and rallied from a 9-2 deficit in the tiebreaker to edge John Roca and Kevin Ward Jr., 11-9.

USHA National One-Wall Championships - Saturday's Results

Dan Vera reaches through Armando Duchesne's legs for a return in the Masters final.

2006 USHA National One-Wall Championships

Theresa McCourt earned her first one-wall singles crown on Saturday to go with her recent world win. McCourt defeated defending champ Tracy Davis in two games that were interrupted by a rain delay. But that didn’t stop McCourt’s aggressive attack as she confidently held off a late charge by Davis after the delay.

In the men’s singles, Satish Jagnandan was extremely precise in his two-game win over Robert Sostre while Cesar Sala showed his athleticism in an impressive win over Rookie Wright. Later in the doubles, Wright hurt his shoulder and couldn’t continue in the second game.

In the A singles, a first-ever finish is in store for Sunday. After taking the tiebreakers for a three-way tie in head-to-head results in the round robin down to total points scored, the end result was still a tie and Jurell Bastidas will square off for a rematch with Allan Sanchez on Sunday.

Several more singles titles were decided on Saturday as Dan Vera won the Masters, Joe Agosto won the Golden, Dan Flickstein decided not to default and won the Supers, Mike Driscoll added the one-wall singles to his myriad collection of titles, and Max Forcht was too strong for the rest of the 70-plus field.

2006 USHA National One-Wall Championships

After rain overnight, play started indoors at the Hebrew Educational Society on Friday but a beautiful day ensued. All but two matches were played on Friday, in spite of the delay.

Emmett Peixoto’s run was halted by Robert Sostre, who had Emmett shaking his head. “I’m so bad, please don’t watch me,” Emmett said during a bad run near the end of the second game.

All four semifinalists should be ready to play their best on Saturday as each advanced in two games.

Tracy Davis will face Theresa McCourt, who edged former champ Brenda Pares in her semifinal, for a possible repeat for the women’s title on Saturday.

Ace Tour and USHA Series Event Draws for Aug. 19
Satish is the smooth victor at Ace Championship Series...Davis tops Pares!

Men's Finalists Jagnandan and Wright are presented their trophies. Women's Finalists Davis and Pares are presented their trophies.

Posted Saturday, August 19, 2006 by USHA

BROOKLYN, N.Y. - Both Satish Jagnandan and John "Rookie" Wright faced first round scares but were able to get on track to face off in the finals at Coney.

Paul Angel got to 21 first against Satish but was unable to hold on to it losing 25-21.

In similar fashion Raul Retain jumped out to a early only to have Rookie tie the game at 23 all. It was a this point a controversial non-call stopped action for too long. When the game resumed it was 'all Wright' for Rookie as he quickly dispensed with Raul's upset winning 25-23.

Satish moved quickly to the finals. But in the other semifinal, Rookie trailed Cesar Sala in the semi-finals and he had to reach back to win the game.

In the finals Satish got off to a early lead focusing on 'serve and shoot' and without much effort was up by 10 early on. Again, Rookie was able to mount a charge back but his obvious fatigue and the effortless style of Satish was too much for Rookie overcome.

In the Women's division Brenda Pares and Tracy Davis provided the large crowd an opportunity to view classic percentage handball. Both players moved each other around the court and relied on shot placement rather than power. Though the rallies were long and the points hard fought Tracy's early lead was never relinquished.

Thanks go to Milton Jones, Tournament Director and President of ACE, and his supporters: Java, Melody Ruiz, Coach and Tony Roberts.

Paul Brady won the Open singles over Tony Healy and Healy and Eoin kennedy won the doubles over Brady and Michael Finnegan in an exciting final day of play in Edmonton.

The Women's doubles final made the Canadians happy as Lisa Fraser and Jessica Gawley defeated Sibeal McKenna and Fiona Shannon in a great final.

Ireland's Duxie Walsh and Robbie McCarthy, and the USA's Chuck Reeve Armando Ortiz, Jim Economides, and Ralph Weil earned rare slams in the four-wall, taking the singles and doubles in their respective events.

All events were finished by Saturday.

Duxie Walsh was back in the winner's circle on Friday, defeating Egin Jensen for the 40-plus title.

David Steinberg won the 50-plus singles over Kevin Geraghty, who had beaten Steinberg in Ireland three years ago in an early round. "I'll be in Portland in three years and hope to play you again," Geraghty said as he congratulated Steinberg.

You can catch the action on the WPH webcast.

In the women's four-wall, defending world champ Fiona Shannon defeated USA's Anna Christoff, 14, 11, for the Open title on Wed.

The action heated up in other events on Wednesday as well. Canadian legend Merv Deckert lost two heartbreaking 21-20 games to Kevin Geraghty in the 55-plus. Roger Berry needed a tiebreaker to beat Billy Silcock in the same event and will face Dave Steinberg in the semis today.

Top seeds in the 70-plus also had a hard time as Fred Chapman and Charlie Wicker were ousted. Curt Creed took out Wicker in three and Chapman defaulted to Paul Wachholz with a sore shoulder after dropping the first.

"These Irish guys have really stepped up their games," Berry said after his close call.

John Dolan, who represents the Japanese contingent at the World Council meetings, was ecstatic. "I'm happy to report that after 20 years, we have won our first match in world competition," Dolan reported. "Tsuzuki won today in two games." A group of Japanese players have competed in each championship since the 1986 even in Kelowna. For the record, Tsuzuki didn't come in a B event but the 60 open, where he ran into Ernie Virgili in the next round.

In one-wall, USA's Tony Roberts injured his knee in the singles final against fellow New Yorker William Polanco. Luckily, the pair had already won the doubles beforehand and thus Polanco has slammed in men's events. Theresa McCourt duplicated that effort int the women's events. Paul Williams won the 40-plus and Steve Kraft slammed in the 60-plus events. Basque players have filled the semis of the B singles. Four-wall play starts today!

Luis Moreno leaps in celebration after clinching championship point.

Posted Monday, July 24, 2006 by USHA

VENICE, Calif. – The Boy’s 17 and 19 singles finals as well as the 19 doubles final were all decided by tiebreakers. Armando Ortiz fought off a 20-14 match point deficit to force a tiebreaker, where he won 11-3. He then teamed with opponent Ricardo Ruiz to win the 19 doubles over Luis Moreno and Braulio Ruiz 21-11, 17-21, 11-7.

Moreno, facing his doubles partner, needed the third game to defeat Braulio Ruiz, 17-21, 21-11, 11-8.

All four players involved in the finals will no doubt be battling on the three-wall courts for many years to come.

Tommy Torres slammed in his last year of eligibility for the Boy’s 15 division. Torres won in two games over Ricky Ortiz, and then teamed with Tyree Bastidas to win the doubles over Brant Bidegain and Ryan Sutherland.

Brant Bidegain earned yet another title in his young handball career. Bidegain took home the Boy’s 13 singles with a two-game win over Venice’s Joel Torres.

A special thank you goes to Gary Cruz and the SCHA, Rick Herrera, and David Ruiz and the Venice Beach Rec. Center staff for their continuous help throughout the tournament.

2006 USHA National Junior 3-Wall Championships - Friday's Results

Maldonado makes a return against Brown in their quarterfinal match.

Sean-Thomas King with Peixoto gives a thumbs up to 'American' Three-Wall.

Posted Saturday, July 22, 2006 by USHA

VENICE, Calif. – A crack of a handball hitting the wall broke the morning’s silence on the Venice Beach Rec. Center’s handball courts. While surfers caught waves only a hundred yards away, handball players began play in the National Junior Three-Wall Championships.

Cody Townsend of Redding, California upset Pasadena player Mark Zamora Jr. in the Boy’s 19&Under Singles. From there, Townsend advanced to the semifinals with a tiebreaker win over Tucson’s Abraham Montijo, 19-21, 21-15, 11-2. Townsend hopes to extend his run as he faces Luis Moreno of Tucson on Saturday.

The Boys 17&Under Singles provided what was by far the most exciting match of the day. Evan Brown (Eugene) gave Chris Maldonado (Tucson) all he could handle as the two battled to the wire before Maldonado pulled out the close win, 21-13, 13-21, 11-10. Maldonado held a 10-6 advantage before Brown gained the serve and clawed back to tie the score. The two exchanged a few match point opportunities before Maldonado called for a timeout and a glove change. After play resumed, the players traded two more innings and two exciting rallies before Maldonado gained match point.

Also of note, Australian Sean-Thomas King made the trip to Venice to participate in his first 40’x 20’ 3-wall match in the States. “Our courts are bigger and the ball moves a little slower, so it took awhile to adjust to the speed.” King said.

King, who is playing in next month’s worlds championships, did well advancing in his first match before falling to Oscar Amaya, 21-10, 21-13.

Doubles play also began with 13 teams competing in the Boy’s 19 Division and 7 teams in the Boy’s 15. See results below.
